Do You Need Sunglasses in Winter?

Sunglasses are associated with summer – long days of driving around with the convertible top down or spending time lounging on the beach. But what about winter? Should you still be wearing sunglasses on your outings during the season of cold and snow?

The short answer is yes, definitely. Here’s why.

  1. Reduces glare: Winter weathers bring cold precipitation that covers everything in water, snow, and ice. This can cause extremely bright reflections when in direct sunlight, which can cause glare and vision impairment. This is particularly dangerous when driving, but also when enjoying winter activities like snowmobiling and skiing. Sunglasses reduce glare for a safer and more comfortable experience. Polarized lenses are the most effective at protecting eyes from dangerous glare and reflections.

  1. Keeps eyes safe from debris: Snow, salt, wind – these are staples of winter weather. Sunglasses can protect eyes from any particles in the atmosphere and keep them from wind damage and dryness in cold or extreme temperature.
  2. Reduces eye strain: The glare of snow and ice and the amplification of light against a white snowy backdrop can mean more squinting, leading to fatigued eyes and headaches. Sunglasses can help reduce the exposure to that direct light and keep eyes from getting tired.
  3. UV rays at higher altitudes: Winter, cold temps, and snow mean more people flock to winter sports and activities like skiing and snowboarding. This often leads to people spending more time at elevated heights, where UV rays are more powerful. Sunglasses protect eyes from the damaging effects of the higher concentrations of UV light at greater altitudes.

Even when it’s not sunny and hot, the sun is still a risk to eye health. Don’t let winter conditions keep you from wearing sunglasses. No matter what the season, there’s always a good reason to keep your eye health in mind and protect your vision.
