Report Finds Americans Spend Half Their Days Interacting with Media

The Nielsen Total Audience Report conducted a survey and found that American adults spend more than 11 hours a day either watching, listening to, reading or interacting with media.

There are many reasons why more people are camping out on media sites.

  • There are many new platforms, and the upcoming younger generation leverages several different social media sites, compared to older generations that focus primarily on one media site, such as TV.
  • The ability to pause Live TV and record multiple programs at once using DVR capabilities has increased adults’ TV viewing usage, which is up to 4 hours and 46 minutes per day.
  • Adults that get their media content online also went up to a total of 3 hours and 48 minutes a day.

The report also finds that the significant increase in these statistics is attributed to people using apps and the web on their Smartphones. In fact, 62% of the statistics mentioned above are from Smartphone usage, which is a 13-minute increase over last year.

Adults between the ages of 18 and 34 spend nearly 43% of their time on various digital platforms to obtain media interaction, of which 29% is from Smartphones apps and web usage. This is the most of any generation.

Additionally, the report found that many adults consume media via video and social media channels. Platforms that use video content are what accounts for a substantial portion of media viewing time. This includes time spent on computers, TVs and video apps or web usage on Smartphones and tablets. These platforms netted Americans nearly 6 hours per day of viewing.

As far as spending time directly on social media network platforms, adults 18 years and older spend nearly 45 minutes per day checking their feeds or posting their activities.
