The Ups and Downs of Blue Light

Blue light is found in both natural sunlight and artificial lighting that comes from everything like the lighting in our homes to the light emitted from Smartphones, tablets, and other electronic devices. The light spectrum is made up of many different wavelengths, with blue being just one of many. Altogether, these colors make up what scientists call “white light.”

So why focus on blue light?

The wavelengths closer to the blue end of the spectrum are shorter and emit more energy. In small doses, these lights are not much a problem, but in large doses, they can cause everything from a painful sunburn to potentially harmful eye damage. While most of this light is sourced from the sun, the amount of time users spend on other sources such as tablets and smartphones has that exposure up in recent years.

Are there different types of blue light?

Yes. There are two spectrums of blue light, measured in nanometers, or nm. The blue-violet spectrum is measured somewhere between 380nm and 455nm, where blue-turquoise light is measured between 455nm and 500nm, roughly. The potentially harmful light is blue-violet, which is why BluTech Lenses block up to 455nm, to filter out the “bad” kind.

Is all blue light bad?

No. Blue light can be essential to some things such as:

  • Treating Seasonal Affective Disorder
  • Helping to regulate our natural circadian rhythm, which keeps us awake during the daytime and sleeping at night
  • Give us a healthy dose of Vitamin D through skin absorption

How can we protect ourselves from the harmful blue light?

The best way to protect our eyes from the potentially harmful effects of too much blue-violet light absorption is to invest in a pair of BluTech Lenses blue light-canceling lenses. They filter out up to 455nm of blue-violet light to dramatically lessen the effects.
