Combating the Negative Effects of Computer Work

It’s estimated that people who work with computers are spending somewhere around 80% of their work day sitting at a desk in front of a screen. While this may not seem too challenging compared to more physical jobs, working this long in a stationary position can be very hazardous to your health.

How can sitting down hurt you?

Sitting for long periods of time can cause potentially short term and long-term health risks. Sitting affects:

  • Blood circulation
  • Posture
  • Weight
  • Eye sight

Sitting in front of a computer screen for long periods of time can carry even more risk with digital eye strain and repetitive movements that can cause injury.

Are there any mental effects?

Absolutely. Even though we need those who work primarily with technology, it can lead to depression from being in isolation, and spending less face-to-face time with colleagues or friends. This can also manifest physically in backaches, headaches, and other issues.

What are some ways to combat these negative effects?

The first step is to take a breather from the screen every 20 minutes or so. Even if you can’t step away from the work, focus your eyes on something at least 10 feet away to reduce the effects of digital eye strain. Other ways to help with the issues are:

  • Do some desk exercises to keep your body moving
  • Invest in a pair of BluTech blue light-canceling lenses to reduce eye strain, blurred vision, sleeplessness, and headaches
  • Chat with coworkers and friends on your breaks to relieve some of the anxiety with actual face-to-face time
  • Stay hydrated
  • Take deep breaths and take frequent breaks
