Digital eye strain is an ever-increasing phenomenon. As adults, and children, spend more time using screened devices, the reports of digital eye strain are always growing.
Digital eye strain, also known as Computer Vision Syndrome, is discomfort that follows prolonged digital device use. The blue light that is emitted from computer screens, tablets, smartphones, e-readers, televisions and gaming systems can be directly related to common symptoms of digital eye strain.
These symptoms include:
- Headaches
- Eye pain
- Blurred vision
- Dry eyes
- Neck pain
- Shoulder pain
Some symptoms will subside once digital use is stopped, yet others can lead to long-lasting and reduced visual abilities.
Preventing digital eye strain involves taking steps to control the length of time using each device, as well as the environment that the devices are used in.
Computer Monitor
When designing a work or desk space pay special attention to the placement of the monitor. Screens should always be flat (not tilted).
Position the top of the monitor so that it is at your eye level. Keep the monitor at arms-length away. Closer will make it hard to focus on the letter. Farther will encourage you to squit and lean forward.
Lighting
The monitor should be the brightest light in the room. Keep any overhead lighting dim. Add lamps and softer lighting to the room if overhead fluorescents are installed.
Always wear blue light blocking lenses. These block out the potentially damaging blue light that can contribute to digital eye strain symptoms. Use these lenses anytime you are utilizing a screen, including computers, smartphones, and televisions.
Minimize Glare
Glare from light reflecting off of walls and finished surfaces can enhance the effects of digital eye strain. Walls with darker colors and matte finishes will reduce the glare. Add an anti-glare screen onto your display.
For the greatest comfort, set yourself up for success. Spending a little time designing your workspace to reduce the chance for digital eye strain will prove incredibly worthwhile.
