How LED Technology is Impacting You

LED lights are commonplace and all around us.

Yet, the health impacts of LED light exposure are not always positive.

We know that LED lightbulbs can last longer than traditional lightbulbs. Yet, it is important to ask at what cost to us.

New research is consistently showing that the blue light that gets emitted from LED light sources may be harmful to your eyes.

Blue light exposure can also impact the ability of your body to produce melatonin. Melatonin is needed to trigger sleep response. Melatonin is also vital to helping us stay asleep throughout the night. Often, people will experience fatigue throughout the day if they did not have enough melatonin throughout to stay asleep at night.

Blue light from LEDs can come from LED light bulbs, handheld devices such as cell phones, tablets, computers (both laptops and desktops) and televisions.

With all of this exposure around us, how is LED technology impacting our ability to live a full and happy life?

LED technology is fairly new. It tends to produce energy more in the blue spectrum of light.

Eyes are especially sensitive to this portion of the light spectrum. LED bulbs emit a great deal more blue light compared to compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and incandescent bulbs.

At night, surround yourself with light from incandescent bulbs whenever possible, as these have the least amount of blue light emissions.

When you use devices at night, it can make it more difficult for our bodies to produce melatonin. The melatonin is needed to help us fall asleep quickly and stay asleep throughout the night. With LEDs in televisions, phones and computers, we are being exposed to a great deal of blue light, right as your our bodies are trying to produce melatonin.

Be sure to take breaks from devices. If you are unable to completely avoid devices prior to going to bed, be sure to wear blue light blocking lenses to help mediate the effects.

A great amount of blue light exposure from LED light sources could be contributing to your insomnia or difficulty staying asleep.

If you notice that you feel fatigued when you wake in the morning, consider your LED light sources and how you can reduce your exposure right away.

It is likely simpler than you think to manage your LED light exposure.
