Is blue light exposure really that big of a deal?

Every day, millions of people are exposed to screens, the sun, and blue light from lightbulbs. Yet, many are still unsure why it is important to be mindful of the exposure.

Blue light is part of the visible light spectrum, between 400 nm and 500 nm. Blue light is one of the shortest and highest-energy visible wavelengths.

Digital devices and LED lights all emit blue light. These devices have an intense spike right at 455 nm. 

How are people exposed to blue light?

Artificial light is one of the biggest sources of exposure to blue light for adults and children. With much of our daily lives spent indoors, the exposure has grown in recent years. We are surrounded by lightbulbs, LEDs and digital devices that emit blue light. 

Due to this more modern technology, it is very easy to exceed the healthy levels of blue light. 

In particular, we have found that at night, there can be such high exposure to blue light that melatonin development can be impacted. This can impact your ability to fall asleep and disrupt your sleep cycle for a good night’s rest.

You can also be exposed to blue light from general sunlight. The sun is the primary source of UV light and intense blue light. This exposure impacts visual clarity and can potentially harm your eye. 

So what can you do?

It is not hard to balance out your exposure to blue light with the healthy levels needed for your body. Reducing your exposure to blue light can make a big difference.
