How Much Time Should Your Child Spend in Front of Screens?

The accelerated rise of screen time has impacted many aspects of life. One, in particular, is parenting. With children exposed to engaging, and even addicted to games and content on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, there is a growing concern for how much screen time kids should have access to and how that time impacts their development.

Amid these concerns, the World Health Organization (WHO), created guidelines regarding screen time and physical activity for children under the age of five. According to these new guidelines, “Children under five must spend less time watching screens, or restrained in prams and seats, get better quality sleep and have more time for active play if they are to grow up healthy.”

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, it is best to avoid exposure to media altogether before the age of two. Once a child is between the ages of two and five, limiting screen time to one hour per day of engaging or educational content is best.

For older children, limiting access to technology can often be more of a challenge. One tip to decreasing their screen time is to set device-free zones or times in your home. Whether that’s no phones during mealtimes or no access to devices one hour before bedtime, reducing their exposure to blue light throughout the day (even if only by a few hours) can help decrease the side effects of blue light and create a healthier lifestyle.

Although our devices can be valuable sources of information and entertainment, they emit blue light, which disrupts the body’s circadian rhythm, which can lead to fatigue, migraine, and reduced sleep and productivity. Unfortunately, turning your child’s phone or computer to “night mode” isn’t enough to protect them from the disrupting effects of blue light.

The best way to do so is with blue-light-blocking glasses. BluTech Lenses block blue light without any color distortion, making them the ideal eye wear to use throughout the day. BluTech not only shields eyes from blue light, but also from the sun’s UV light.

Creating guidelines for a child’s screen time and protecting their eyes with blue-light-blocking glasses are two simple steps that will benefit their health and safety.
